Indian national Sarabjit Singh, on death row in Pakistan for the last 18 years, is wary of the situation in the country but his hopes for release has not died down.
Sarabjit wrote a letter to his Amritsar-based sister recently and expressed the hope to walk free one day. "He recently wrote a letter to the family. He is still hoping that he would walk to freedom one day though the present situation in Pakistan has him worried," Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur told PTI today over phone from her village Bhikiwind in Amritsar district.
She said that Sarabjit has also mentioned that he is facing "shortage of medicines, clothes and had virtually no money". The Indian national had crossed over to Pakistan inadvertently in 1990. He was arrested under the name of Manjit Singh for his alleged involvement in four bomb blasts in Punjab province the same year in which 14 people were killed.
An year later, Sarabjit was sentenced to death. He was to be hanged on April 1, last year. His mercy petition is now pending with the Pakistan government.

{{/usCountry}}Sarabjit's wife Sukhpreet Kaur, his daughters Swapandeep Kaur and Poonam, Dalbir and her husband Baldev Singh went to the Kot Lakhpat jail at Lahore in Pakistan to meet him, which was their first meeting in 18 years.
