Police said about 25 armed Maoists abducted Madhab Kirasani, sarpanch of Kurmanur grampanchayat, about 700km southeast of Bhubaneswar, from his house late in the night and killed him after holding a trial in a “people’s court”. His body was recovered in the morning in a forest.

“The ultras have killed at least eight civilians including two village guards, branding them as police informers in the last one year,” Malkangiri superintendent of police Akhileswar Singh told HT.
