“The SBI Unions are non political entities and tomorrow’s strike is being supported by the trade unions affiliated to the left parties in the country,” stated Anil Srivastava, Convenor of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) Uttar Pradesh Unit.

He said that SBI employees and officers would “support” the demands of other bank unions but not participate in the strike. “All SBI branches in the Lucknow Circle would remain open tomorrow,” Srivastava said.

The staff unions of the Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) which were a part of the SBI unions would also not participate in the strike, he said.

A spokesman of the UP Bank Employees Union said that the strike had been called to oppose the central government’s policies on privatisation of banks, acquisitions, mergers and outsourcing activities in the banking industry. The employees are also demanding fresh recruitment of manpower, appointment on compassionate grounds and stringent measures for the recovery of bad debts by banks.
