A bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan granted bail to Memon, convicted by the designated TADA court for his role in the Mumbai serial blasts in which an estimated 800 people had died.

Appearing for Memon, senior advocate Harish Salve contended before the Bench that the convict had already spent more than 12 years in the jail and should be granted bail.

The apex court on September seven last year had granted interim bail to Memon, convicted by the designated court under Section 3(3) of the TADA and 120B (Criminal Conspiracy) of the IPC.

The Court while granting the interim bail to Memon had then imposed a condition that the accused shall surrender before the authorities after obtaining copies of the judgement of the designated TADA court.
