The Supreme Court on Monday gave new hope to the residents of Campa Cola Housing Society’s unauthorised flats as it observed that it was not averse to the new government in Maharashtra coming to their aid.
A bench headed by justice SK Mukopadhyaya said: “The new government will now come in the state. We have no objection if the new government wants to give you (flat owners) relief.”
“What the court wants to say is that if the government wants, it can find help the residents by regularising the unauthorised structures,” advocate Kamini Jaiswal, appearing for the flat owners, told HT.
Though the observations were made orally, they would bring a new lease of life for the residents who have been facing the demolition sword for over a year.
On a fresh plea of residents, who wanted to hold negotiations with the BMC to resolve the matter, the bench had issued notice to the state and the civic body. It had even sought a response as to whether another chance could be given to save the residences.
Seven high-rise buildings of Campa Cola Housing Society were constructed between 1981 and 1989. The builders had permission for only six floors. One of the compound buildings, Midtown, has 20 floors and another building, Orchid, has 17 floors.
