After a year of uncertainty, the Supreme Court on Monday directed West Bengal Government to give admission to 65 students under the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota in the first year MBBS course for the academic year 2005-06 in the nine colleges run by the state.

The court had earlier quashed their admissions to two Medical colleges saying that the NRI quota could not exceed 15 per cent of the total 200 seats available in the colleges, which had admitted over 100 such students under the NRI quota.

This order of the court had resulted in agitation by the students and the state Government, which had taken large amount as admission fees, had intervened in it saying it would not allow the future of these students to be put in jeopardy.

A bench comprising Justice YK Sabharwal and Justice DM Dharmadhikari, after hearing senior advocate Gopal Subramaniam appearing for the students who had challenged the Calcutta High Court order cancelling their admissions, ordered that these students would be admitted into the nine medical colleges run by the state Government for the academic year 2005-06 against the 15 per cent NRI quota.
