THERE IS more bad news in store for the people of MP battling the scorching heat. The State Government is firming up a schedule for power cuts and may come out with it this week.
In the load-shedding schedule to be announced, the power cuts are likely be extended to 2 hours or more from existing unscheduled over 1 hour power cuts in the divisional headquarters excluding Bhopal, 4 hours or more from the existing unscheduled 3 hours in district headquarters, 9 hours or more in the tehsil headquarters from existing 8 hours and over 16 hours in rural MP from 15 hours.
With the dam water level of MPSEB’s hydel stations going down considerably, the State Government, of course, is left with no other option but to spell out a schedule of load-shedding plan soon. And for this, the State Energy Department is seeking daily status report of power demand and supply and load-shedding from the MPSEB headquarters – Shakti Bhawan here, from the last couple of days.
In view of the depleting water level at the dams built on river Narmada, the MPSEB is taking a hydel power support of just 30 mega watt (mw) during the day time to save water for night hours to avoid people grope in dark in roads and hospitals of the major cities.

{{/usCountry}}The MPSEB during peak hours is generating 700-mw hydel power. At the moment against the off-peak demand of 4000 mw, the MPSEB thermal power stations are generating 1700 mw power (two units 210 mw and 300 mw out of order), while its generating 30-mw hydel power and getting 1275-mw from the Central sector. In view of this, a shortfall of 995-mw-energy exists during the daytime.
Similarly, during the peak hours, against the demand of 5000 mw, the MPSEB thermal and hydel power station were generating 1700-mw and 700-mw electricity respectively while it is getting 1275-mw from the Central sector purchase. A shortfall of 1325-mw exists during peak hours.
A top official of MPSEB preferring anonymity said that the State Government would come out with the scheduled power cuts plan. “We are helpless as there was no room for the power purchases because of the power shortage nationwide.
Also, we can’t overdraw power from the western region grid, Mumbai, following a warning from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission to all electricity boards in the country, he said.
