Michael Schumacher celebrated his 20th anniversary since making his Formula One debut in the worst possible way when crashing in qualifying for Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix.

The 42-year-old seven-time German champion failed to make it past Saturday's first qualifying session after his Mercedes lost a rear wheel, hit a side barrier before sliding unceremoniously down the circuit on three wheels to come to rest on a patch of safety gravel.

"I do not know what happened," he said over the team radio. "Something unexpected happened."
Schumacher, a six-time winner at Spa-Francorchamps, will now set off from the back of the grid for Sunday's race.
