Russian hardware and Indian software are coming together to devise a smart anti-terror tool -- a camera with artificial intelligence -- to help security agencies identify and track terror suspects.
Scientists from the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahadad (IIIT-A) and Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) are working on a smart surveillance system that minimizes the human element in monitoring crowded places. The smart surveillance cameras would hunt for atypical movement patterns of people and vehicles using high-end sensors.
The intelligent surveillance system would be capable of analysing behaviour patterns of people and vehicles moving through the monitored area.
“The team is trying to automatically learn what typical activity patterns exist in the monitored area and then have the system look for atypical patterns that may signal a person of interest – someone engaging in nefarious behaviour or trying to endanger the lives of others,” IIIT-A director, MD Tiwari said.
III-A scientists are designing the software or the brain of the smart system – writing softwares that will help the creation of a wide-angle panoramic view of the monitored area, map the panoramic view and evolve a high-resolution aerial image and actively track the selected targets. The Russian scientists are handling the bulk of hardware designing for the project, Tiwari said.

{{/usCountry}}“The unique feature of this new system would be its power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This would enable the system to identify a suspect or a suspicious object irrespective of the disguise or place of hiding, raise a silent alarm to alert the security personnel even as it continued to track the object or person even if on the move,” explained Abhishek Vaish, coordinator of the project, being funded by the Union government’s Department of Science and Technology (DST).
