Slamming Pakistan for "seldom investigating" the work-related killings of scribes, the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has demanded that the country conduct a thorough inquiry into the recent shooting death of a newsman there.

Two masked gunmen on a motorcycle shot 32-year-old newsman Maqbool Hussain Sail late on Thursday in Dera Ismail Khan, 280 kms southwest of Islamabad. Sail died on his way to the hospital.

The CPJ said it is investigating to determine whether Sail's murder was related to his work as a journalist. Police are also investigating the case, but have made no arrests.

Sail, who worked for the Pakistani Online News Network, was on his way to interview opposition PPP leader Nawab Azek when he was killed.

"We call on the police to reveal all the facts about Sail's death. We know from past experience that the government seldom investigates or reports on the deaths of journalists," the CPJ said.

It also demanded police carry out a "vigorous investigation" into this crime.
