all over Maharashtra on September 7 to mark 100 years of the song.

"The programme will be organised at the village level and all urban areas where there is a shakha (unit) of the party", Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut told PTI in Mumbai on Sunday.

Raut rejected allegations that his party was trying to 'extract political mileage' of the row over the government order for recitation of Vande Mataram in schools.

"We planned the mass recital much before the government proposal," Raut said. "This is a public awareness campaign, being organised to commemorate the 100 years of this inspiring song," he said.

Those opposing recitation of the song are betraying the nation, Raut said and added that "Everyone should join in singing the national song, Vande Mataram".

Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh recently announced that singing of Vande Mataram was optional for schoolchildren following opposition from various Muslim groups.
