The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has written to the central government asking it to make a fresh request to Denmark for the extradition of Kim Davy — the alleged mastermind of the December 1995 Purulia arms drop case — in a move that could see him standing trial for his role finally.
“The CBI has written to the central government for the sending of a fresh request to Denmark for the extradition of Kim Davy, who orchestrated the Purulia arms drop conspiracy,” a CBI source told HT. “All required formalities have been completed, including the procurement of specific sovereign assurances from West Bengal authorities, since the trial court is located in Kolkata, for the protection of Davy’s human rights,” the source added.
This will be India’s second attempt to get Danish national Davy, 52 — whose real name is Niels Holck — extradited. A Danish High Court had rejected India’s first extradition request in 2011, on grounds that he ran the risk of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment during his custody in the country.
The agency’s draft extradition request, approved by the government, seeks to protect his access to Danish diplomats. India’s last request had also assured of no death penalty and option of serving any jail-term in Denmark prison for Davy. During trial in Denmark, Davy, had admitted to having orchestrating the dropping of the arms and ammunitions — including over 300 AK 47s — to fight the then-communist government in WB. “I did what I did. When I was a young man if you saw the sign of a hammer and a sickle, you knew it. Communism denoted something evil. My fight was against the evil and it was a political crime,” Davy had said.
