Senior bureaucrat A Sengupta will assume charge as full-time Member Secretary of the Board for Reconstruction of Public Enterprises (BRPSE), following the government's nod to his appointment last week.

Sengupta, currently Additional secretary in the Department of Commerce, will take charge on April 1, 2006.

"In his capacity as Member Secretary of BRPSE, Sengupta will be given the rank of Secretary," sources said.

The Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises was serving as part-time member secretary of BRPSE prior to Sengupta's appointment.

The government had last year accorded in-principle approval for appointing a full-time member secretary to the Board.

BRPSE had recommended names of top managers in PSUs for the post, but the government finally settled for an IAS officer.

Apart from a full-time member secretary, the Board comprises seven members, including former bureaucrats and retired and serving managers of PSUs.

So far, the Board has held around 30 meetings and examined more than 30 cases of under performing PSUs. It has cleared proposals to revive more than 25 companies at the rate of one case per meeting.

Till now, only eight cases have been cleared by the Cabinet, including Heavy Engineering Corporation, Hindustan Salts, Bridge and Roof, BBJ Construction, British India Corporation, National Textile Corporation, HMT Bearings and Praga Tools.
