Punjab and Haryana continued to be in the grip of a severe cold wave for the fourth day on Sunday.
The Air Force station of Adampur, near Jalandhar, recorded a low of -2.2 degrees Celsius, a tad better than the -3.8 degrees Celsius recorded on Friday night.
The Sikh holy city of Amritsar too recorded a low of -0.5 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures in most parts of north India hovered between three to seven degrees Celsius below normal due to the ongoing cold spell.
MET officials in Chandigarh said the cold wave conditions were caused by northwestern winds sweeping over the region, bringing icy winds. They said that the dry and cold weather is likely to continue till Tuesday before the situation starts getting normal.
Chandigarh — the capital of Punjab and Haryana — had hit a 33-year low of 0 degrees Celsius on Friday night, but it was slightly better on Saturday with 0.4 degrees, still 7 degrees below normal.
Patiala recorded a minimum temperature of 0.6 degrees while the industrial hub Ludhiana had a low of 1 degree Celsius.
Towns and cities in neighbouring Haryana were better off with Karnal and Ambala at 3 degrees Celsius. Narnaul recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 0.5 degrees Celsius.
