The infamous Jammu and Kashmir sex scandal, that rocked the state Assembly on Tuesday, has been moving at a snail’s pace in the Chandigarh district courts.
The Supreme Court had transferred the case to Chandigarh in 2006 after Kashmir lawyers refused to defend the 14 accused.
All were granted bail on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
In September 2006, the accused were produced for the first time in the sector 17 court in Chandigarh. And nearly three years later, the court is still recording prosecution evidence against the accused.
Till date, six prosecution witnesses have deposed, including the victim and main witness. The case comes up for hearing again on August 27.
The CBI has about 100 witnesses and it was for the first time that a chargesheet was produced in a coded form. The accused sought permission for supply of decoded chargesheets, which was opposed by the CBI citing a “security threat” to witnesses.
After framing of charges and recording of statements of the prime witness and victim, however, the chargesheet was decoded as per the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
