"The latest report of the civil surgeon says there is improvement in Shahabuddin's health and he is in a condition to walk," District Magistrate Santosh Kumar Mall said.

Mall said the MP, who was visited by Lalu in prison on Wednesday, was being provided medical facilities according to the jail manual.

He said, "we (district administration) will inform the state medical board to fix a date for his appearance before it for clinical examination."

Shahabuddin had failed to appear before the state medical board on May 25 last on the ground of ill health.

"Future steps will be taken on the basis of the recommendations of the state medical board after the clinical examination," Mall said.

The DM said the state medical board had in the past opined that treatment of Shahabuddin's spinal problem was possible through traditional method in Siwan itself and "we made the arrangements accordingly".

RJD leaders have charged the state government with neglecting the MP's health problem.
