A senior official at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), which is testing the remains, said that because three years have passed since the remains were first discovered, testing the samples has been very difficult. “Had the samples been fresh, we could have finished the tests in 24 hours, but the poor condition of the bones has made our task very difficult,” said the official, who did not wish to be named. “However, we should have the results in a couple of days,” he added.

The FSL has blood samples from Indrani Mukerjea and Siddhartha Das, the biological parents of Sheena Bora. It will compare the DNA from these with that of the remains to establish whether or not they are Sheena’s.

However, irrespective of when the report is ready, it will be sent to the Mumbai police only after it is approved by director general of police Satish Mathur, who oversees the FSL. “Mr Mathur is in Nanded right now, and the report can be forwarded only through him,” said the FSL official, adding that Mathur would be back in Mumbai only on Monday.

The Mumbai police on Friday received the results of a craniofacial superimposition (skull photo) test, which confirmed that the skull recovered from the outskirts of Gagode Budruk village in Raigad was that of Sheena. If the FSL tests results in a DNA match, it will further strengthen the police’s case, said a source.
