Police resorted to mild cane charge as the Shiv Sainiks tried to proceed towards the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium where the match was going on.

They stopped the protesters, more than 500 metres away from the venue's outer security ring.

They were cane-charged while trying to break the police cordon.

The Shiv Sena protested against Pakistan playing in India on a call given by their party leader Balasaheb Thackeray. Thackeray had asked his party activists to disrupt matches where Pakistan was playing.

Some Shiv Sena leaders had vowed to dig up the pitch before the match but could not reach the stadium due to heavy deployment of security personnel ever since the Champions Trophy started.

The Shiv Sena has been demanding that Pakistan should not be allowed to play in India as that country was allegedly supporting terrorism against India, including its alleged role in the serial blasts in local trains in Mumbai in July this year.
