Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav has announced a relief of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the vendor.

"Deoband police station SHO Yashveer Singh and his driver constable Brijveer have been suspended and circle officer has been removed after the violence," said Bhavesh Kumar Singh, inspector general (Meerut zone), who rushed to the town on Tuesday night. He directed officials to initiate stern action against the troublemakers.

Charges of murder have been slapped against a constable on the complaint of the family of the deceased, Afjal, 40, while the police have registered a case against the mob for unleashing violence after his death.

A constable allegedly hit Afjal with a wooden staff during an anti-encroachment drive on Tuesday. His death sparked commotion among the locals, who launched a demonstration. They were demanding action against the erring policemen and relief for the family.
