Over a dozen shops were gutted in a major fire that erupted at a market place in Meghalaya's Ri Bhoi district late last night.

The fire gutted around 10-15 shops, mostly wodden, at the Byrnihat market along the Meghalaya-Assam border.

Deputy Commissioner Akashdeep Singh said the reason for the fire was not yet known and the actual damage was being ascertained.

There was no human casualty, he said adding that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
