It’s a busy crossing. The signal’s dead. You step on the pedal, but the BEST bus speeding from the other side beats you to it. Now, you can only cross after the 200 vehicles following the bus have crossed.
Instead of sticking your thumb to the horn, a more productive option would be to lodge a complaint with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
If the faulty signal is not repaired in time, the defaulting contractors will be fined an amount equal to two weeks’ maintenance fees, the BMC has promised.
The BMC has collected Rs 19 lakh in a year in fine from contractors who could not keep signals running, a civic official said.
A municipal corporation circular says that if the bulb of the signal pole is not working, it should be changed within eight hours.
And if the signal is not working for over a week, the civic body will fine contractors Rs 50 for a day per pole.
“The amount collected as fine will be used to upgrade the signal system all over the city,” the civic official said.
