"Data on rainfall, temperature, wind speed and humidity, will be recorded at the automatic weather stations on a day-to-day basis for a scientific study about global warming and climate change in the Himalayan state," Science and Technology Secretary M A Arrawatia said.

One of the centres has already been set up at the Science Centre Marchak in East Sikkim and three others will be stationed at the Rathong glacier base camp and assess the condition of ice reserves there, he said.

Arrawatia said that his department was also working on a proposal to set up infrastructure for monitoring snow cover by using satellite technology.
