Five of them were apprehended from Gondia district on Sunday, while one was rounded up on Monday morning from Chandrapur, they said.

They included two members of the state-level committee of CPI (Maiost) and a village sarpanch, the police said.

Gondia Superintendent of Police Suwej Haq told media persons that acting on a tip the police laid a trap near Deori village and nabbed five Maoists who were travelling in a jeep.

They were identified as Bhimrao alias Bhanu Bhaskar Bhovate (42), his wife Sunanda (36), Gangaram Poreti (32), Chindramani Valade (37) and Sanjay Thauram Banjara (30).

While the couple, reportedly state-level members of CPI (Maoist), hails from Amravati district, the others are native of neighbouring Chhattisgarh. Poreti is a sarpanch, they said, adding arms and Naxal literature were also recovered from their possession.

All the five were today produced before the district court, which sent them in five-day police custody.
