HUNDREDS OF Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists today went on a rampage here while observing bandh to protest against cow-slaughter and smuggling. At least six policemen, including one Inspector, were injured during clashes between police and demonstrators.
The activists charged that despite repeated protest by them against cow-slaughter and interception of a truck carrying cows for slaughter on January 23, the administration and the government did not pay heed to their demand. However, the trading and business community here did not approve of the manner in which the bandh was enforced by the activists.
The agitators confronted the policemen and shopkeepers on several places including Hazira in old Gwalior and Phalke Bazaar etc. They even damaged public properties, police vehicles and misbehaved with TI Kishore Singh Bhadauria near Hazira police station.
Sensing the tense situation, the police came back heavily on agitators with retaliatory measures. Superintendent of Police M S Narang described the situation as under control. He said that police have arrested 75 persons under Section 151 of the IPC for violation of law and obstruction in official duty.
The VHP activities burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan near Jinsi Nala No-2 in the afternoon in protest against government’s apathy to stop cow-slaughter. The Bajrang Dal activists staged a dharna at Maharaj Bada in the evening to protest against arrest of their members. They demanded release of detainees with immediate effect and quashing of FIR.
