The farmers may have taken the extreme step as they were unable to repay the bank loans taken last kharif season.

Kishore Tiwari of the Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti claimed that as many as 63 farmers, mostly cotton growers, have committed suicide in May alone.

Almost all the victims were failed to repay their agricultural loans because of meager support price of raw cotton.

“Forget repayment, it is difficult for them to even feed their children,” Tiwari said.

He insisted for food security to prevent more suicides.

The deceased were identified as Sanjay Kharag and Ramrao Awsale from Buldhana district, Jagarao Uke, Ravindra Gawande and Mahadeo Gharpure from Wardha district and Ramesh Pendhale from Akola district.
