Delhi rains LIVE updates: Following two days of heavy rain that triggered traffic congestion at several key stretches, the Delhi Traffic Police identified 169 waterlogging-prone traffic hotspots across the national capital and implemented a comprehensive monsoon preparedness plan, a senior officer said on Wednesday.

The officer said widespread traffic snarls plagued the city over the past two days as persistent rainfall slowed vehicular movement across several arterial roads, including ITO, Rohtak Road, NH-48, Ring Road, Punjabi Bagh, and Shadipur. Low-lying areas also experienced water accumulation, which affected traffic flow during peak hours.

A senior officer said the department completed preparations before the onset of the monsoon by identifying locations that have historically experienced waterlogging and traffic bottlenecks.

"A total of 169 traffic hotspots vulnerable to waterlogging have been identified across Delhi. Adequate traffic personnel have been deployed at these locations to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and immediate response in case of water accumulation," the officer said.

He said the Delhi Traffic Police is maintaining constant coordination with civic agencies responsible for drainage and road maintenance to ensure that waterlogging is cleared at the earliest. The officer said fixed water pumps have been installed at designated vulnerable locations in coordination with the concerned agencies.

Arrangements have also been made to deploy mobile pumping units wherever required.

Monsoon rains LIVE updates: The sub-Himalayan districts of West Bengal are bracing for very heavy rain during the next two days and heavy rain thereafter till July 13, raising the possibility of landslides in the hills and inundation of low-lying areas in the plains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that heavy to very heavy rain will occur over Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar till Friday morning, with extremely heavy downpour at one or two places on Wednesday.

The Met office warned of possible landslides in Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills and inundation of low-lying areas in the plains in the region due to the heavy rain.

It said that heavy rain will occur in the north Bengal districts from July 10 to 13.

Thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, are likely to occur in south Bengal, with the possibility of heavy rain at one or two places over North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and Purba Bardhaman on July 9 and 10, the IMD said.

Cooch Behar recorded West Bengal's highest rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Wednesday at 10 cm, it said.

The other places which recorded significanlty high rainfall in north Bengal are Aryaman tea estate (9 cm) in Alipurduar, Ghughumari (9 cm) in Cooch Behar and Baradighi tea estate (9 cm) in Jalpaiguri, according to IMD data.

Monsoon rains LIVE updates: Gujarat's Surat city received 358 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending Wednesday morning, leading to a flood-like situation in the city's creek area and widespread waterlogging which severely disrupted normal life.

More than 3,400 people were rescued and over 3,800 shifted from low-lying areas of the city, officials said.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reviewed the situation at a cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar. He would be visiting Surat and Valsad on Thursday, officials said.

Surat city received 14.09 inches or 358 mm of rain between 6 am on Tuesday and 6 am on Wednesday, according to data from the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC). Though the rain halted later, the situation remained dire in the city and surrounding areas.

Delhi rains LIVE updates: Monsoon rains are expected to strengthen in July, aiding the sowing of kharif crops after a slow start to the season, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Wednesday.

The overall rainfall deficit narrowed to 24 per cent in July from 33 per cent in June, Chouhan told reporters after a high-level review meeting.

The number of rainfall-deficient districts fell to 178 from 262 as several parts of the country received good rain in recent days, he said.

The government is closely monitoring the situation in 13 states, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Bihar, Jharkhand, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal and Odisha, Chouhan said.

Total area planted with kharif crops was down 21 per cent at 35.085 million hectares as of now in the 2026 season, compared with 41.28 million hectares a year earlier, government data showed.

The delayed start of the monsoon has particularly hurt sowing of soybean and cotton, Chouhan said, adding that farmers have been advised to switch to short-duration, less water-intensive crops such as maize, pearl millet (bajra) and green gram (moong), to limit the impact.

The government has been preparing for a potential El Nino impact on the monsoon since April, Chouhan said.

Delhi rains LIVE updates: The combination of a low-pressure system and a western disturbance brought about Delhi-NCR’s first spell of heavy rainfall on Tuesday, plunging several localities of the Capital under water for a short spell and bringing Gurugram to its knees, as usual, with the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway severely gridlocked until late Tuesday.

In an advisory issued around 10pm, the Gurugram Police urged corporate companies to allow employees to work from home amid adverse weather.

“In view of the continuous rainfall in Gurugram and the forecast of further heavy rain over the coming days, there is a strong possibility of waterlogging and severe traffic congestion. To ensure public safety, reduce unnecessary traffic…We strongly urge the corporate sector and private establishments to allow their employees to work from home for the next few days,” Gurugram police said in a post on X.

Delhi rains LIVE updates: The season's first spell of monsoon rain brought Gurugram to a near standstill on Wednesday, with widespread waterlogging triggering long traffic snarls across major arterial roads and leaving thousands of office-goers and daily commuters stranded during the morning rush hour.

Several stretches across the city remained inundated even after overnight rainfall, disrupting vehicular movement on key roads, including IFFCO Chowk, the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway (NH-48), Golf Course Road, Gurugram-Faridabad Road, Cyber City and Udyog Vihar. Slow-moving traffic and bottlenecks were reported from multiple intersections as vehicles navigated waterlogged roads.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Gurugram on Wednesday, warning of continued moderate to heavy rainfall. The impact of the rain was particularly visible along NH-48, where water accumulated on service lanes, forcing vehicles to crawl through flooded stretches. ACP (Traffic Headquarters and Highways) Satyapal said traffic police teams remained deployed across vulnerable locations to regulate traffic and minimise congestion.

"Traffic teams and Gurugram Police personnel are continuously working to ease congestion on roads. Traffic congestion was reported in the early hours on certain arterial roads, but the situation largely remains under control," he said.

Weather news LIVE: The southwest monsoon lashed many parts of Rajasthan on Wednesday as the meteorological department forecast widespread rainfall conditions for the next two to three days.

Ramganj Mandi in Kota district recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 10 cm, followed by Nithuwa in Dungarpur, Badi Sadri in Chittorgarh at 9 cm, Kathumar in Alwar and Ajmer each at 8 cm. Many other areas recorded below 8 cm rainfall during a period of 24 hours ending Wednesday morning.

Heavy rain affected normal life in several districts. In Alwar, torrential rain in the morning inundated markets and roads. Water entered several residential colonies.

Intermittent rainfall was also reported from rural areas of Jaipur.

In Chittorgarh district's Bari Sadri town, heavy overnight rain led to waterlogging in several localities including cloth market and railway station road.

Rain today updates: Train services between Neral and Karjat stations in Maharashtra's Raigad district were suspended for nearly an hour on Wednesday after the overflowing Ulhas River inundated the tracks, officials said.

According to Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila, train operations remained suspended in both directions between 10.40 am and 11.32 am, news agency PTI reported.

He said the Ulhas River had been flowing above the danger mark since 9.30 am due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, leading to waterlogging on the railway tracks.

Due to the rainfall across several states over the last 3-4 days, the number of districts facing a rainfall deficit has dropped from 262 to 178. Conditions have improved in some districts due to good rainfall... This has improved sowing prospects, and the pace of sowing is now expected to pick up.”

"The delay in the monsoon has had some adverse impact on the sowing of Arhar, soybean, and cotton.
