A small earthquake rattled a rugged mountain area in southeastern California, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The magnitude-4.3 quake struck about 5.28 pm on and was centred about 10 kilometres southwest of the Salton Sea, according to a preliminary report by the US Geological Survey.

A magnitude-3.2 aftershock struck Friday about two minutes later.
The 963-square-kilometre Salton Sea, about 120 kilometres northeast of San Diego, is California's largest lake.
