To ensure that the road share of private vehicles is not compromised with while providing segregated lanes for buses and cyclists on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely has asked the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) to carry out a real time traffic study on the existing and future BRT projects.
“I have told DIMTS to analyse the ration of various vehicles on each corridor and plan the widen cycle and pedestrian tracks accordingly,” Lovely said.
Lovely said the movement of private vehicles on the 5.8-kilometre BRT corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand has improved considerably. “We are working to improve whatever glitches are remaining on the corridor,” Lovely added after his first official visit to the corridor as transport minister.
Since the proposed parallel road between Press Enclave and Chirag Dilli may take time to come up, the minister asked the officials to find alternative means to improve traffic movement on the 5.8-kilomtre stretch.
According to senior transport officials, efforts are being made to provide at least three lanes to private vehicles on all future BRT corridors. “Wherever we have scope, we are widening the road and wherever the available space is just three-lanes, there will be no segregation of lanes and mixed traffic will move,” Delhi transport commissioner R.K.Verma said.
Apart from inspecting the BRT corridor, Lovely also reviewed various transport projects undertaken by DIMTS, including automatic fare collection system, modernisation of Inter-State Bus Terminals, and corporatisation of private buses.
