Amit Shah may have got approval from the RSS brass for taking over as the next BJP chief, but some sangh members expressed apprehension over his candidature in a meeting in Mohankheda, 100 kms west of Indore.
During the interactive sessions, questions were raised whether Shah’s appointment, who has been named in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case in Gujarat and is facing judicial trial, will send the right message to the masses ahead of several crucial assembly elections in the country.
There were deliberations whether Shah who delivered Uttar Pradesh for BJP can repeat the same performance in Jammu and Kashmir, one of India’s most volatile regions.
There were counter views that national BJP general secretary JP Nadda isn’t a bad choice but Shah can infuse energy ahead of assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and J&K.
“Though Sangh hasn’t released formal decision, Shah is most likely to be its choice unless something damning surfaces against him in near future,” a Sangh functionary said wishing anonymity.
But the knowledge that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is squarely behind Shah’s appointment will help smooth the way for his appointment. Sources said RSS and BJP may hold back appointment of new BJP chief till Lok Sabha’s monsoon session ends.
