Sonia Gandhi on two-day visit to the northeast
United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi is set to arrive in Guwahati on Friday on a two-day visit to the northeast, during which she is expected to address a series of meetings, including a farmers' rally.
A Congress party spokesman said about 50,000 farmers are expected to attend the rally in Guwahati.
"We are expecting a massive turnout and hope Sonia Gandhi announces some package for Assamese farmers," Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters.
Later in the day, Gandhi is scheduled to present the prestigious Srimanta Sankardeva National Award to noted journalist BG Verghese and Kesabananda Deva Goswami, an exponent of Assamese Satriya culture, at a function here.
The Congress president is also expected to address a closed door meeting of party workers on Friday night. She is scheduled to leave for Mizoram Saturday on the second leg of her northeast trip.
