LK Advani demanded an apology from Sonia Gandhi on Monday for her statement at a Jharkhand rally two days ago that India was in greater danger from people inside than foreign terrorists. The BJP leader said it was an implied attack on his party.
He said though Sonia did not name his party, it “substantially accuses us and the comments were clear” and it was an “irresponsible and dangerous statement”.
“She is quite ignorant of the Congress tradition and its erstwhile leaders. Otherwise she wouldn’t have made such an irresponsible and dangerous statement. I have seen election since 1952, nobody ever made such a statement.”
“After the Chinese aggression Nehru asked the RSS to send a contingent for the Republic Day parade. Now we have a Congress president who does not even know the history of her party,” he chided her. “This is slander. She should apologise for this statement or join a debate on fundamentalist issues like Al Qaeda.”
He continued his tirade against Manmohan Singh. “He has proved to be the weakest Prime Minister particularly for devaluing the high office because there can be no executive superior to the PM,” he said referring to his frequent trips to 10, Janpath to seek advice.
On a lighter note, Advani drew a simile with Jesus’s crucifixion and BJP’s formation, saying his party was resurrected on an Easter Sunday after ‘crucifixion’ on Good Friday. It was on Easter in 1980, he said, that the BJP was born. The resolution against those in the erstwhile Jan Sangh by their rivals in the Janata Party was moved on Good Friday on April 4 of that year and the BJP was formed the next Sunday.
