With barely a fortnight left for the assembly elections in Uttarakhand, the Congress has suddenly stepped up the poll onlaught. Party president Sonia Gandhi is set to address two election meetings in the state on Tuesday.
Corruption will be the main talking point of the Congress campaign. The party has already come out with a chargesheet against the BJP government.
“BJP is a party with dual face. During elections, it shows the face of a political party but gets converted into a commercial outfit once in power. There have been six major scams during the BJP tenure,” said Birendra Singh, Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttarakhand affairs.
The high-pitched campaign will be kicked off from Roorkee, where Gandhi will address her first public meeting in the state, and later she will travel to Tehri.
Gandhi was scheduled to address a rally at Gauchar in Garhwal region on November 9, but could not do so owing to health reasons. Later, due to poor weather conditions her Haldwani rally scheduled for January 4 had to be cancelled too.
Gandhi is also expected to address a rally at Almora on January 21. But before that, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would address two election meetings at Rishikesh and Rudrapur on January 20.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who is launching a three-day tour of Bundelkhand on Tuesday, is expected to visit Uttarakhand around January 23 and address six to eight rallies.
