Mulayam Singh Yadav has criticised the Congress for hailing Sonia's resignation from the Lok Sabha over the office-of-profit controversy as a "big sacrifice", saying that she was left with no other option but to quit.

"She was left with no other option but to resign from both Lok Sabha and National Advisory Council for occupying an office of profit, while the Congressmen are trying to hail it as a big sacrifice and gain political mileage out of it," Yadav said while addressing a convention.

On Jaya Bachchan's disqualification, he said she had not taken "a single rupee" as Chairperson of the UP Film Development Council.

Reiterating his allegation that the Central government was bent upon "weakening" his Samajwadi Party, Yadav said "even a strong leader like former prime minister Indira Gandhi had not succeeded in weakening the socialist movement which would survive against all odds."

The state of affairs in the Congress could be gauged from the fact that in Rae Bareli, the Parliamentary constituency of Gandhi, none of the party candidates could win the last Assembly elections, he said.

Citing the various welfare programmes being run by his government, he appealed to the people's representatives to work honestly for improving the image of his party in order to win the next assembly elections.
