Soren’s election lays bare the corruption that thrives within
It’s astounding to see how a man with a criminal record managed to become the Chief Minister of Jharkhand (Shibu Soren sworn in, December 31). With government employees being sacked every now and then over charges of corruption, it’s shocking to see how a man with charges of murder against him was elected to such high office. Shibu Soren becoming the Chief Minister of Jharkhand only serves to lay bare the corruption that resides at the heart of Indian politics. Ministers too are public servants and should also be guided by certain rules of conduct.

Still hung up on the West
This is with reference to the report, Sena to play moral cop again (December 30). The decision of the Shiv Sena to warn pubs, hotels and the youth of Mumbai who indulge in drugs or revel in obscenity during the New Year celebrations is quite appropriate. It has been observed over the years that every New Year night some atrocity or the other takes place, and youngsters who don’t care a bit about the conse-quence, suffer. I strongly feel that such parties during the New Year should be banned, as most of the youth lose control due to the pres-ence of cheap drugs and alcohol. It’s unfortunate that aping the West is still so popular among the younger generation.

2009: the year of shame
The year 2009 had an eventful ending, although most of the events were quite shameful. From our spineless stance at Copenhagen, to the disgraceful conduct of S.P.S. Rathore and the Indian judiciary, to Ajmal Kasab’s flip-flops, the fight over Telangana, not to forget the Ferozeshah Kotla match fiasco — all taking place within the last 10 days of the previous year paints a depressing picture of the our nation’s health. Let’s hope 2010 is better.
