The Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon (RMG) may make a foray into the southern part of the city, as well. A feasibility study for expansion of the service from Sikanderpur Metro station to Golf Course Road has been completed and submitted to the Haryana government for approval.
The seven-kilometre stretch on elevated tracks with six stations is likely to cost about Rs2,200 crore.
The terminal station near Sector 56 is likely to have a multi-storeyed parking lot as the consortium company ITNL Enso Rail Systems (partner company of RMGL) has sought about five acres land for this station.
As per the study, the project is likely to take about 70,000 cars off the Golf Course Road and reduce carbon emission by up to 40,000 tonnes.
"The proposed extension would be a double track on elevated structure along the Golf Course Road. We have submitted the feasibility report to the Haryana government that is likely to decide on it at a later stage," said Sanjiv Rai, managing director of RMGL.
Rai said the proposed extension would have about six stations at an average distance of 900-1000 metres. The Haryana government would now study the feasibility report and follow the procedure of floating global tenders inviting bids for the project.
