The clash took place when the SP candidate and sitting MLA Mahesh Narain Singh and BSP nominee Rakesh Dhar Tripathi were invited to a college ground in the area for a talk show organised by the news channel.

The fierce rivalry between the two came to the fore during the talk show where both of them exchanged heated words, which enraged supporters of both the candidates who came to blows and pelted each other with stones. Some of them also exchanged fire.

A nephew of the SP candidate received a bullet injury in his hand while a number of people were also wounded in the stone-pelting.
SP supporters later staged a dharna in front of the Handia police station where an FIR was lodged by the party candidate.
