The conduct of an IPS officer who was the superintendent of police of Raigad district when Sheena Bora’s burnt body was found near Bagode village has come under scrutiny. The officer, RD Shinde, apparently asked officials at Pen police station not to proceed with any investigations.
The state government is likely to order an inquiry into the entire episode to ascertain if there was any ulterior motive. Maharashtra’s director general of police, Sanjeev Dayal, said, "We are collecting facts and after everything is in place we will proceed further."
Shinde, currently additional commissioner of police (Central) in Mumbai, refused to comment.
A diary entry at the Pen police station states that after the burnt remains of a body were found from Gagode Budruk village in May 2012, Shinde, the then SP, had asked them not to proceed.
Accordingly, Pen police station officials did not register a case of murder nor did they register a case of accidental death. The normal practice is to register a case of accidental death or murder depending upon the condition of the body and the findings at the crime scene.
A senior IPS officer requesting anonymity said, “What has happened is completely off the standard operating procedure that should have been adopted. I am even surprised that the police station did not even recover the body completely.”
