Four days after the incident, Haq was removed from the SP’s post and attached to the DGP headquarters on December 27.

Two police gunmen — Pal Singh and Gajraj Singh — attached to BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari, who is accused of the engineer’s murder, have also been sacked.

Talking to journalists the Principal Secretary Home Kunwar Fatehbahadur and DGP Vikram Singh said Haq was suspended for being slack in monitoring law and order in Aurraiya district. “He had failed to check criminal activities. He was also found indifferent toward imparting his duties,” the officers said.

The DGP said the police have seized the Tavera car used by Tiwari and his associates on the night of the murder. The vehicle was recovered from the Sahil police station area.

Gupta had also refused to sign PWD contractors’ pending bills. The contractors were close to Tiwari.

DGP Vikram Singh has also directed all the zonal IGPs, DIG Range and SPs to take action against those who threaten engineers, doctors and citizens for extortion.
