A 17-year-old died after his car skid out of control on early Monday morning in Worli. He did not possess a driving licence.
Varad Agarwal was driving his Maruti Swift at high speed on Lala Lajpat Rai Marg with his friend Ajit Sharma (17), when it skidded on the wet roads in front of the NSCI club.
Agarwal lost control of the car and it zigzagged on the two-lane road and mounted on the footpath, crashing into an electricity pole and a tree trunk. Agarwal died on the spot, while Sharma, having jumped out of the car when it climbed the footpath, escaped with minor injuries.
At 2.30 am, a passerby, Shivraj Sherde (24), who witnessed the entire episode, phoned the control room and informed the police.
The police rushed the boys to a hospital, but Agarwal was declared dead.
The car belongs to Sharma’s father. Sharma, a resident of Nepean Sea Road, had picked up his friend from his Haji Ali residence and were headed towards Worli. Agarwal had recently learned driving, and did not even possess a licence.
Sub Inspector YK Potekar of the Tardeo police said, “Agarwal was in great speed and could not control the car. He was only 17 years old and did not even have a licence. He should not have risked driving the car without licence and especially on wet roads. Inexperience killed the boy,” said Potekar.
