They were rushed to Bhagwati hospital but Bhavin Hasoda died on Monday morning, while Pratiksha Hatim (24) is in the ICU.

The couple lived in the same locality and was seeing each other since the last three years, the police said.

While Bhavin helped his father in his carpentry business, Pratiksha worked at an imitation jewellery-making workshop.

“They were to get married soon,” said Rajendra Hatim, a relative of Pratiksha.

But their relationship soured when Bhavin started drinking and gambling and Pratiksha started avoiding him.

One of Pratiksha’s relatives, requesting anonymity, said she wanted Bhavin to quit his bad habits and get a job.

“Four days ago, Bhavin had threatened Pratiksha’s parents that if she continued to avoid him, he would teach her a lesson,” said Rajendra.

They had an altercation.

“In a fit of rage, the accused took out a knife from his pocket and slit the girl’s neck causing a deep injury,” said Inspector Vijay Mukhne, of the Charkop police station. “She also sustained minor injuries on her stomach.”

Pratikha, who was bleeding profusely, managed to reach her first-floor flat, while downstairs Bhavin stabbed himself thrice in the abdomen.

When Pratiksha’s father Yashwant, an autorickshaw driver, was rushing her to Bhagwati hospital, he found Bhavin on the ground floor.

He, along with other building residents, took both of them to the hospital, where they were operated on.

“Bhavin acted on an impulse. Had he controlled himself this would have not happened,” said a relative of Bhavin, requesting anonymity.
