On August 14, 2006, the convict Yatendra Chauhan (31) had shot his colleague Chandrapratap Singh outside Khan's residence 'Mannat', after Singh teased him about his gun. Shah Rukh was reportedly, inside his house when the incident occurred.

Chauhan and Singh were employed with Tops security, a private security agency and were deployed at Khan's residence for security in addition to the police cover given to him. Chauhan was the only armed guard.

According to the police, Singh was patrolling the bungalow when he saw Chauhan sleeping in the chair. Singh teased Chauhan about his "rusted" gun and asked if it worked.

Angered by this, Chauhan aimed his gun on Singh's chest and fired a round saying "this is how my gun works."

Chauhan's lawyer had argued that the firing was in a fit of rage and thus he could not be booked for murder and can be booked only for culpable homicide, where the maximum punishment is ten years.
