SSP directives to check fires at public places

SENIOR SUPERINTENDENT of police (SSP) Vijay Singh Meena has directed city hotels, restaurants, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, petrol pumps, industrial units and multi-storeyed commercial and residential complexes to ensure fire-fighting arrangements on their campus at the earliest.

The SSP issued notices to at least 40 such units on Tuesday.Taking a serious view of the fire that broke out at a city hotel on April 29, Meena said responsibility had been fixed in the case.He said a case had been registered against organisers of the function and proprietor of the lighthouse concerned. It may be recalled that the marriage pandal was reduced to ashes within minutes before the marriage party arrived at the venue, Hotel Regency.

The SSP has also suggested ways to protect lives and property from fire in case any such incident occurs.He directed the agencies concerned to ensure that underground wiring was done by licensed mechanics and fire-resistant wires were used for the purpose. Besides, he suggested installation of devices to control fire at the time of any incident.The SSP also directed arrangement of proper passage up to the venue so that fire tenders could reach the venue.

Besides, the district police chief directed the people concerned to take approval from the Fire Department by May 9 and if the department did not give its approval, the venue should not be used otherwise the proprietor/organiser concerned would be held responsible, he said.
