Meanwhile, this election is going to prove an uphill task for the ruling Samajwadi Party as its rival Apna Dal seems ahead in the fight.

After the withdrawal of nominations on Tuesday, only two candidates were left in the fray and the election is scheduled for January 7. Four candidates, Anil Kumar, Shiv Das, Suchita Devi and Indrawati Devi had filed their nomination papers but two of them —Indrawati Devi and Shiv Das — withdrew from the contest on Tuesday.

Anil Kumar filed his nomination as the candidate of Apna Dal whereas Suchita Devi filed as Samajwadi Party nominee. Suchita Devi who won the election of district panchayat

member from the Apna Dal switched over to Samajwadi Party and filed her nomination for the prestigious post of chairperson.

However, SP’s rebel candidate Indrawati Devi withdrew her nomination papers.

SP has 12 district panchayat members out of total 39 members whereas Apna Dal has 17 members. Candidates have to get the support of 20 district panchayat members to win the election.
