Statewide drive against power thieves soon, says minister

IDENTIFYING POWER pilferage as a serious problem, Energy Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav today said a statewide drive would soon be launched against big power thieves and the mafia. He said even the National Security Act (NSA) would be invoked against those found involved in power theft.

He was talking to media persons after presiding over a review meeting with senior UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) officials at Shakti Bhawan here today. Among those present at the meeting were Chairman and Principal Secretary (Energy) AK Khurana, MD Avnish Awasthi and discom MDs.

Yadav said that officials had been directed to make an all-out efforts to increase revenue. Pending dues be recovered and power theft be curbed, he said.

Yadav said that 15 days’ time had been given to field staff to give improved performance failing which action would be taken against them. But officials, he said, had been asked to ensure that no consumer was unnecessarily harassed in the name of checking. Officials were also asked to evolve a hackle-free system for giving new power connections, he added.
