An intense earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the Kermadec Islands Wednesday, the Hong Kong Observatory said.
The epicentre was initially determined at 29.5 degrees south latitude and 177.8 degrees west longitude, about 1,470 km from Wellington, capital of New Zealand.
