SEVERAL CANDIDATES filed their nominations for the first-phase student union elections here on Sunday. Polling in these colleges will take place on August 26. Since it was Sunday, a very few students came out in support of their respective candidates and the nomination process was almost peaceful.
At Juhari Devi Girls Degree College, candidates along with their supporters approached the Nomination Officer and submitted their papers.
However, at the Halim Muslim College, the contestants violated the norms and took out processions to file their papers. In order to maintain peace, the district administration had also deployed adequate police force. Eleven candidates for each of the two posts of the president and the secretary filed their nominations.
At BND College, the nominations were filed under the strict police arrangements. The college has been a centre of violent student politics. Candidates here do not mind teaching a harsh lesson to their opponents. Consequently intensified police security was made in and outside the college. The supporters of candidates in small processions resorted to slogan shouting but later they were asked to stop it. For the post of president and general secretary, 11 and 17 nominations were filed.
At DC Law College supporters were seen accompanying their respective candidates and raising slogans in favour of them. However, amidst the presence of police arrangements no untoward incident took place.
