Students catch election fever, go campaigning

The two major government colleges in the state capital, DAV (PG) College and DBS (PG) College are experiencing low student turnout. This is because the majority of the students are involved in election campaigns of different parties. Gaurav Talwar reports.

It’s not only political parties that are busy canvassing and enlisting voters’ support in the assembly election that will be held on January 30. The two major government colleges in the state capital, DAV (PG) College and DBS (PG) College are also experiencing low student turnout. This is because the majority of the students are involved in election campaigns of different parties.

While most of the students in both the colleges are associated with students’ wings of one or the other political party, only a small number of apolitical students can be seen attending college lectures or sitting on the college campus.

Even the principal of DAV (PG) College, Devendra Bhasin, accepted that due to the election environment in the state capital, less number of students attended college these days.

He told Hindustan Times, “Students who are associated with ABVP, NSUI and SFI are busy campaigning for their party candidates and are bunking college. But on the other hand, there are also students who are attending the college regularly”. DBS (PG) College too is witnessing low attendance due to election fever in Dehradun and most of the classes remain empty these days.

Ashish Rawat, who is associated with ABVP and is a president of students' union of DAV (PG) College, told HT, “I am canvassing in Mussoorie constituency for BJP and there are hundreds of other ABVP members, who are busy campaigning for other candidates in their respective constituencies”.

Students associated with NSUI, which is a student wing of the Congress, are also busy ensuring Congress' victory in the coming election and have thus put their college lectures on the backburner.
