Now students aged above 18 won’t need to visit any government offices to get their voters’ identity cards issued. In an effort to encourage youngsters to take part in voting, the district administration will join hands with colleges to include all first-time voters into the electoral roll.

All government and private collages will be involved in executing the programme which is to be launched next month, a government officer said.

“Next week we will call a meeting with the representatives of colleges, who will be assigned as nodal officers for the entire coordination between the administration and the students. The idea is to encourage first-time voters to get enrolled in the voters’ list without having to make them do the leg work,” said a senior officer in the electoral department of the district administration.

The initiative followed a recent order in this regard by chief electoral officer Sumita Mishra. The district administration is geared to put the idea into motion before the colleges reopen next month after summer vacation.

About the ID cards of other voters, the officer told HT that around 27,000 Form-6 were

collected by prospective voters across Gurgaon before the last month’s election of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon. “We will start sending those identity cards by post after July 15,” the officer added.
