Hundreds of Delhi University students staying in college hostels may not need to vacate rooms on Wednesday as was originally planned.
The Commonwealth Games guests are expected to arrive in the national Capital only from October 1.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has told DU colleges that they will need hostel rooms only two or three days before the end of the month and not by September 15 as the UGC had earlier indicated to the university.
Several college hostels underwent renovation earlier this year to accommodate guests of officials and athletes participating in the Comonwealth Games starting in the Capital from October 3. Many Delhi University colleges had not allowed students to rejoin hostels after the vacations.
But some colleges like St. Stephen's have allowed their students to stay in hostels and have told them that they can stay put till almost the end of this month, sources said.
"We expect several hundreds of students still staying in their college hostels to benefit as they will not need to vacate their rooms till the end of this month,” a senior UGC official told Hindustan Times.
Indraprastha College, a girls college, has also offered rooms in the new hostel building it has built for the varsity students asked to vacate their rooms for the Commonwelath Games, the official said.
The university will remain closed during the Games —which continue till October 14 — and most residential outstation students are expected to go back to their homes and are unlikely to have to struggle for accommodation during that period, the official argued.

{{/usCountry}}The UGC's latest communication to the colleges comes after the Delhi government, UGC and the Games organizers faced flak for evicting students from their hostels to meet accommodation requirements for the Games.
Approximately 2,700 hostel rooms across DU and Jamia Millia Islamia will be used to house guests of Games participants.
