The union HRD ministry has offered the post of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) vice chancellor to Subramanian Swamy reports said Wednesday even as the BJP leader denied any formal offer was made.

PTI reported that Swamy has put some riders before accepting the coveted post, something which the senior leader mentioned in his tweet.

“Media is on fire that I have been offered the JNU VC post. No formal offer nor will there be if the Govt cannot meet my pre-conditions,” Swamy tweeted

It also remained unclear what riders the BJP leader placed before the ministry for accepting the offer.

The development would be of interest because JNU is a traditional Left bastion and Swamy is very vocal about his right-wing views.

Swamy has served as union cabinet minister and as a member of the Planning Commission of India. He has a PhD in economics from the Harvard University.

Interestingly, the development comes even before the union ministry is to finalise the search-cum-selection committee for selecting the new VC. The current VC SK Sopory is set to retire in January next year.

As per the rules, a panel of names selected by the committee is sent to the president (who is visitor of the central varsities) by the HRD ministry before the announcement of the new VC.

The advertisements for inviting applications from the interested candidates for appointment of the new VC was given in August this year.
